Flavors.me: Social Media Mashup

Flavors.me, a social media mashup

Yesterday, one of the new topics in Twitter was Flavors.me. Flavors.me is a new social media service that allows you to create a simple one-page website and link your social medias into one sleek mashup. The web page can be customized for your own taste: you can select the colors and layout, and even upload a custom background image. The service is free for basic use, but if you want to include a contact form, you’ll need to pay some bucks.

The service is simple but in fact very clever. It’s very easy-to-use and it’s highly customizable. If you don’t want to or don’t know how to create a business card website for yourself, Flavors.me is the one of the best ways to implement it. Flavors.me has just finished the beta phase and is now public. (Note, I do not have anything to do with the service.)

Yesterday I had to, of course, sign up and create a business card page with Sipping Designs colors. It can be found at http://flavors.me/perminna. At the moment my page includes my Flickr stream, Last.fm plays, Twitter feed and Sipping Designs RSS feed. You can also check out the awesome Flavors.me sites under Flavors.me directory.

The premium service costs $20 per year. With premium account you can get a custom domain, real time online statistics and a contact form. They promise to add more layout options, an updated member directory and a search functionality for premium service.

After you’ve signed up, you can customize your Flavors.me page. The available options include: name and description, services (for example Posterous, Tumblr, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare and Etsy) and layout and colors. The page settings can be accessed from your Flavor.me page’s upper right corner (Show Design Panel).

Medium Format Macros

Last weekend I also tested the 0.4m extension tube I got with Kiev 60. I attached the extension tube between the Kiev body and 50mm f/4 Flektogon and shot a roll of Kodak Tri-X 400 around the house. It was kinda like a test round and I was lacking ideas. Last summer I took quite a lot macro and close-up shots of flowers and plants and this summer I intend to do the same, except now I’ll shoot also on film.

Kiev 60, an extension tube and 50mm f/4 Flektogon

An extension tube shortens the minimum focusing distance of the lens, allowing a larger magnification. With 0.4m extension tube I was able to focus up to 8-10cm from the object. Normally the closest focusing distance with Flektogon is 0.5m so the extension tube shortened that by 40cm. Extension tube also causes shallower depth of field. The down-side is that you’ll need more light than when shooting without. I measured the light with Sverdlovsk-4 exposure meter but it does not know you are using an extension tube. It was difficult to approximate the needed increase in exposure time.

New Sigma Lenses For DX Cameras

Sigma has released new lenses for DX cameras (with an APS-C size image sensor). All of the new products are something I would gladly take.

Sigma released new lenses for DX cameras

First one on the left (in the photo above) is Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM, fast replacement for standard 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. It has a larger aperture, built-in focusing motor (HSM) and optical stabilizer (OS). Lens diameter is 77mm.

The one in the middle is Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM, really wide angle lens with built-in focusing motor (HSM). It’s quite slow but wide angle is something you usually use outdoors for landscapes (lots of light) or indoors for interior shots (flashguns). It offers great field of view from 121/114° (depending on the camera) to 75°. There’s no information if filters can be used as the lens comes with built-in hood. This is something I could really think of purchasing because I’ve been after a wide angle for some time now.

The lens on the right is Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM, fast portrait lens with built-in focusing motor. It would be great for low-light photography, portraits and macros. Also 85mm will have a 77mm filter size.

All of the lenses will be available for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Sony DSLRs. The retail prices are still unknown.
